Microsoft today announced
a new homepage preview that’s been inspired by the company’s all-or-nothing
Metro-design approach named Xbox360 . The old
homepage gets still opened when you load the Microsoft website in a web browser
of choice, with the new homepage only available on a preview location that you
can access here.
What immediately
notice is that the new homepage uses a fluid design that dynamically changes
the width of the content so that it fits exactly on the screen, and can be
viewed optimally regardless of screen size or device used to access it. While
you may need to scroll down more on smaller screens, you will get the same
contents and layout on all devices that you use to open the website.
Meanwhile the new features will also include Facebook
sharing, Cloud storage for game saves and a new feature within Xbox Live
profiles called Beacons that makes it easier for Xbox users to find their
friends when playing online. The update will also deliver support for YouTube
and Bing searches, utilizing voice control via Microsoft’s Kinect accessory. Fonts and Elements have been increased on the
new site, which makes the page even more accessible on devices with smaller
screen resolutions.
The biggest
chance for me is the removal of the “link-mess” on the homepage. It is now a
lot easier to find what you are looking for on the website. The homepage is not
the only page on the website that has been optimized. Take a look at the
re-designed download center, which finally offers direct access to operating
system specific downloads.
